Following the great success of the Liionidas open-baffle design, which pairs a Lii Song full-range driver with a woofer to reinforce the bass, we asked ourselves: could we achieve a similar result with just one integrated unit?

Inspired by this idea and by traditional coaxial drivers, which combine a tweeter and a mid-woofer in a coaxial arrangement, we developed an innovative solution that integrates a full-range driver and a woofer. Following the Liionidas concept, instead of crossing over both drivers, we let the full-range driver operate freely while using the woofer only to reinforce the lowest bass frequencies.

When we built the first prototype, simply combining a Fast-6 with a W-15, we were convinced from the very first test that this was the right direction. With a single unit, we achieved both refined detail and energetic, non-fatiguing bass. However, because the prototype used existing components, there were still some issues with coherence.

Without hesitation, we decided to develop a new series of dedicated cones and optimize the structure based on the Platinum-6 and a high-efficiency version of the W-15P woofer, specially designed to pair with the Platinum series. The result is the PW-615, an innovative design. Both drivers use the same cone material, with carefully-designed and coordinated structures, so the full-range driver and the woofer share the same tonal character, ensuring smooth integration and a seamless transition. The full-range driver is mounted in a sealed, inverted-cone metal housing. This not only extends the high-frequency response of the Pt-6 and isolates it from the woofer’s sound waves, but also helps disperse sound and widen the sweet spot.

We prefer not to present hi-fi engineering as something mysterious, so let us keep it simple: this is a single unit that works like the Liionidas, combining the refined detail, rich body, and spacious soundstage of a full-range driver with the energetic, elastic bass of an open-baffle woofer. If you have heard the Liionidas and enjoyed it, you will likely appreciate the PW-615 in an open-baffle system.

As many will be pleased to know, this unit fits the existing F-15/Fast-15 cutout. If you already use an F-15 or Fast-15 open-baffle speaker and wish to experience a different level of musical impact, you can install the PW-615 directly into the same opening.

Please also note that this unit requires sufficient amplifier power, typically 50 watts or more, depending on your amplifier’s damping factor and control capability.

Good news for DIY enthusiasts: the full-range driver and the woofer in the PW-615 have separate binding posts. You can use the supplied crossover, design and use your own crossover, bi-amp with a tube preamplifier and power amplifier, or try any other configuration you prefer. One pair of binding posts for the full range (8 ohms) and two pairs of binding posts for the woofer unit of double coil (8+8 ohms).
